Jacques Vallee arrived in the United States in 1962 and joined the McDonnell Douglas computing team that contributed to the early NASA Mars maps. He met J. Allen Hynek at Northwestern in 1963 and began the collaboration that produced their joint UAP cataloguing methodology.
His published correspondence with Hynek, particularly the diaries collected in Forbidden Science, suggests the two researchers reached a working hypothesis by 1972 that the phenomenon was real, structured, and not necessarily extraterrestrial in origin.
